The importance of quality photography for your Website

People often underestimate the importance of [tag]quality photography [/tag] in their website. Whether you are running a business or just selling your house Photography can be a powerful selling tool, the saying that a picture speaks a thousand words is very true. With the advent of digital cameras people are often taking photography into their own hands. The result of this can often have a negative effect, especially with interior photography. Without the right equipment and knowledge images are usually too bright or dark, distorted and badly composed.

Photographs and graphics are often the first thing the eye is drawn to. Text is rarely read unless the viewer has an interest in it. People’s attention span can be very short, a matter of seconds while viewing web pages. To overcome this the use of professional photography and well designed layout will capture the viewer’s attention resulting in them spending more time on the site. When their attention is captured they are more likely to read into the site and hopefully take the next step of placing that all-important order with you.

See the two examples above to see the difference between good and well just not up to the job, far to much light and doesnt give the room justice in anyway shape or form.

A skilled photographer will be able to accurately capture the environment he is shooting, creating high quality images that will pay for themselves over time. The images will be well composed, correctly lit and undistorted.

Now that Internet speeds are much higher and more readily available, newer technologies are worth considering. Photography has come a long way since the days of film. An environment can now be re-created as a photographic virtual reality scene, which users can interact with. Interaction means spending more time on the website and taking in more information.

Another fairly new technology is to be able to rotate an object [tag]360 degrees [/tag] around – interacting with the whole object rather than just viewing the front.

These newer forms of photography are really good at grabbing the users attention and keeping them engaged for an average of 3 minutes. With careful design the power of these new techniques can be harnessed and used with great effect.

There is some good advice there Alistair. So often people take their own photographs which I am sure damages their image. People like to see good quality photography. They will spend more time viewing them, increasing the chance of them interacting with the website more…

Yes thanks Pete, unfortunately not everyone thinks that way, as you say often people have a digital camera and think thats all they need to do, as the image clearly shows.

Bad photography is an enormous thorn in any designers side. I wish that 90% of the photography I usually have to work with was as good as the before picture in the example above!

A decent image can encapsulate a lifestyle / a feeling / a mood which adds value that is otherwise impossible to express no matter how good the design / look and feel of a website is.

    Great post!

So many companies and industries can benefit from professional high quality photography. Not only does it show the best possible image for your company and products it conveys a huge sense of professionalism and attention to detail in not only your work but the way you are represented by it.

If you have a business, property, or product that needs to be shown off or displayed on your website or for promotional use why not have it represented in the very best way possible?

Sure, anyone can pick up a high resolution digital camera and produce an image from it to promote a product or, like the great example shown above photograph an interior. But it takes a ‘pro’ photographer to notice the little details, like the open door, the rugs position on the floor, perspective corrections, along with the interior/exterior balanced lighting, and the composition to really make an image shine out above and beyond a simple snap shot that screams the message “that’ll do”.

Maybe a ‘pro’ photographer will cost you more than DIY’ing it, but the results (like above) just speak for themselves. And in the long run it will give your product or property, and your company the professional image and reputation you need to be competitive out there. Also bringing you more return on your visual/image investment than that little DIY point and clicker snapshot ever could…

Thanks for your comments, you have very wise words that are so often ignored/overlooked/forgotten about, and as you say more often then not the results speak for themselves.

      Thank you
