These days there are Instagram photos cropping up all over Facebook and Twitter feeds. To casual viewers, these discoloured and vintage style photos with square, black film backdrops maybe of questionable quality but why is it so popular, well firstly lets start at the beginning….
So what is Instagram?
Instagram firstly is a mobile photo sharing app run from any smartphone and its is also a social network. Think of it as a visual Twitter with followers, only instead of those short tweet updates you give and receive photo updates and within the app you can alter the photos with filters, layers and all sort of special effects – all from your smartphone.
And why is it so popular?
Instagram has seemingly gone from a cult selfie platform to a storytelling platform overnight. As a result of this fast growing success it is challenging the more mainstream social media of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn through photo sharing in a mobile world. The use of Instagram means you can tell a story visually so your audience can emotionally emphasise with it.
We are only at the start of the journey for Instagram, how we as marketeers use this great tool is what will shape 2014, the potential here is phenomenal now we can grasp how this relatively simple app can tell a story in a compelling fashion that customers want to engage with. Instagram will continue to shape the mobile photo sharing world for a long time to come and we believe 2014 will be its year, and while we’re at it why not come and follow me on Instgram http://instagram.com/alistairg – I will follow you back.
